Accreditation is the process by which an outside agency to the organization providing services evaluates that organization against a set of predetermined guidelines and publicly certifies the results (Joshi, Ransom, E., Nash, & Ransom, S., 2014). In 2002, the Joint Commission established its National Patient Safety Goals Program (NPSG). The first set of NPSGs came into effect on January 1, 2003, and was developed to help accredited organizations solve specific patient safety issues (The Joint Commission, 2017).
