Section 1.2, Problem 2

  1. (a)  There are three populations P1, P2 and P3. Population Pi is the collection of variety i corn planted on all plots (with similar conditions), i = 1, 2, 3. Obviously, each population is hypothetical as “all plants” above is not practically possible.

Section 1.2, Problem 4

(a) The population of interest is the air quality on all domestic fights.

Section 1.3, Problem 2

(a) The sampling scheme described above does not produce a simple random sample of size 100 from the recent production of remotes.

Section 1.3, Problem 6

(a) As a first step we identify each client with a number from 1 to 1000. Next, we write each number from 1 to 1000 on a slip of paper, put all 1000 slips of paper in a box and mix them thoroughly. Finally, we select 100 slips from the box, one at a time and without replacement. The 100 numbers selected specify the desired sample of size 100 clients from a population of 1000 clients.

Section 1.4, Problem 4

  1. (a)  The variable of interest is the degree of staleness measured on the flights. And the statistical population is the value of air quality, measured on the 175 domestic flights.
